New RIM CEO clarifies remarks about change
News - January 27, 2012
Newly appointed RIM CEO, Thorsten Heins, sat down with Crackberry to clarify some remarks he made about the company. You'll remember that Mr. Heins suggested RIM did not need to change much to be able to succeed. Those comments were seen by many to be a signal that another insider with the same view as the previous CEOs was in charge, and that RIM would not make the changes necessary to keep up with Android and iOS. Mr. Heins wanted to clarify his remarks. Mr. Heins told Crackberry, "I was talking about drastic or seismic changes," he clar...read more

BlackBerry users are older, more affluent
News - January 27, 2012
A new study suggests that most BlackBerry users are older, more affluent, and have their cell phone bill paid by their employer. The data appears to come from comScore Data Germ. BlackBerry users over indexed in all age segments 35-64 in November 2011, with the 55-64 age bracket showing the highest index of 120. BlackBerry audiences were also more likely to have a household income greater than $75k when compared to average smartphone owners. The BlackBerry became very popular in enterprise situations, so it makes sense that Blac...read more

Is there still hope for BlackBerry?
News - January 26, 2012
The BlackBerry has been going through a rough patch over the last couple of years, but can it make a comeback? Digital Trends gives RIM a last chance in a very interesting article about what happened to RIM's once dominant position, and where they go from here. RIM needs to figure out what kind of company it wants to be. The company has been straddling a thin line between being a business-only brand and a consumer brand in recent years. If it wants to win customers on either side, it needs to demonstrate clear advantages for end users over ...read more

2012 BlackBerry roadmap leaked
News - January 26, 2012
We've heard rumors of the BlackBerry 2012 roadmap this week, but now we have some solid evidence. BGR has gotten its hands on the official roadmap as well as some internal slides, which they published for the world to see. It looks like the original rumors were largely true. RIM is planning to introduce a HSPA+ BlackBerry PlayBook with a 1.5 GHZ processor and NFC. They will also release several Curves aimed at the entry-level market. Probably the biggest and most disappointing news is that the BlackBerry 10 devices are not slated to be rel...read more

Sprint phasing out BlackBerry PlayBook
News - January 26, 2012
Sprint has updated its end of life (EOL) list, and it looks like the BlackBerry PlayBook will be phased out. Supplies won't last very long so at the end of January the PlayBook will no longer be offered at Sprint. Will Sprint consider offering the PlayBook 2 when it comes out? There's no official word on that, but Sprint had to be disappointed with the demand for the PlayBook. It was a dud for sure....read more

RIM stock up on BlackBerry 10 rumors?
News - January 25, 2012
RIM stock tanked for two days after the announcement that the company's co-founders were stepping down, and a new CEO was taking over. It was largely believed that the new CEO, Thorsten Heines, was an insider who does not have the capacity to bring real change to the company. Today the stock is up, and the Financial Times suggests it's because of the rumor of a September release of BlackBerry 10. BGR has reported that RIM will release two BlackBerry 10 devices this year, and it could come in September. The unconfirmed report seems to be ha...read more

Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois asks for Blackberry after stroke
News - January 24, 2012
Illinois Senator Mark Kirk had a stroke this past weekend that required emergency surgery. After the surgery his doctors could tell he was getting better when he asked for his BlackBerry. “He asked for his Blackberry yesterday so he’s ready to go back to work,” Fessler said. However, he added, doctors did not give it to him. The doctors say Senator Kirk has a long road of recovery ahead, but he's doing well....read more

RIM stocks tumbles after new CEO announced
News - January 24, 2012
When RIM's co-founders stepped down as co-CEOs, they probably meant to send a signal to the world that new life was emerging at the top of RIM. Apparenlty, Wall Street doesn't agree. After the announcement RIM's stock fell 8% yesterday, an almost 4% today. That's not the kind of reaction that RIM wanted, I'm sure. Last week when rumors of Samsung acquiring RIM were swirling, the stock jumped almost 10%, but the news of a long time RIM employee taking over didn't quite get the reaction that was expected. It remains to be seen how Thorsten H...read more

RIM's 2012 roadmap includes two BlackBerry 10 phones
News - January 24, 2012
As you know there is a new CEO at RIM. Hopefully, the change will give the company a boost, even though the new CEO has been an insider for awhile (not really new). BGR has put together a roadmap of RIM's activities for the coming year. It looks like the BlackBerry maker will offer two new BlackBerry 10 devices, two new BB Curves, and a HSPA+ PlayBook. RIM plans to introduce two new Curve smartphones within the next few months: the BlackBerry Curve 9230 and the BlackBerry Curve 9320. The 9230 will be an EDGE smartphone and the Curve 9320 ...read more

RIM's new CEO speaks of appointment
News - January 23, 2012
RIM has a new CEO this morning and here he is speaking about the company he takes over this morning. “I pledge to do everything possible to exceed the expectations of the company’s shareholders,” Heins said Monday morning on a conference call. Pointing to RIM’s customer base of more than 75 million users and its next-generation QNX-based platform, the new CEO seems intent on following RIM’s current path on a broad level. He feels that RIM is still innovating and its QNX-based platform and upcoming devices will carry the company into the futu...read more

News - January 23, 2012
Big news today for RIM. The CO-CEOs and founders are out, although still on the board. Is this the new shot in the arm the company needs? Let's hope so. Interesting that they would announce this on Sunday, but here's the press release. Research In Motion Names Thorsten Heins President and CEO • Board Acts on Recommendation of Co-CEOs to Implement Succession Plan • Mike Lazaridis Named Vice Chair of the Board • Jim Balsillie Remains a Director • Barbara Stymiest Named Independent Board Chair • Prem Watsa Named Independent ...read more

RIM's co-CEOs to step down, name new CEO
News - January 22, 2012
According to the Wall Street Journal, RIM co-CEO's Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazardis will relinquish power on Monday, and a little known insider at the company will assume control. Shareholders have been after a reshuffling of the top executives for months, but I don't think anyone guessed that both would step down so suddenly. They have resisted calls for them to resign before, but it seems like they finally saw the reading on the wall. Although both of them are stepping down, they will remain on RIM's board and will surely have influence as ...read more
